This all started when we visited a popular beach spot only to find dirty waters, plastic infested sand, and no regard for the consequences. Beyond beaches, the amount of plastic dumped into the ocean each year adds up to approximately 8 million tons.
What does this all mean for the future?
Most marine animals can't distinguish plastic from food. Animals that eat plastic will often starve, because their bodies can't digest the plastic. This prevents them from eating real food.
In some areas of the ocean, there is more plastic than natural prey.
By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish (by weight).
Many fish consumed by humans - such as brown trout, cisco, and perch - have ingested plastic during their life. The negative effects of plastics can impact the people eating fish.
Did you know that phytoplankton in the ocean is responsible for over 70% of the oxygen we breathe?
No exaggeration, damage to the ocean will have lasting consequences to our ability to survive on this planet.
But enough doom and gloom.
Great Clean Reef was started with two goals:
Firstly, reducing the amount of plastic waste in the ocean.
Secondly, educating others to the benefits of sustainable products and recycling.
The way we aim to achieve this is by creating sustainable products to replace unsustainable practices in our everyday lives, and also being able to add value or convenience to how it was previously done. Our first solution is a reusable silicone straw!
If you check out this infographic below, you will see how much silicone is an improvement over plastic, when you think of how many single use straws are disposed.
